A Family Dog – Not to be confused with The Family Dog

Okay – maybe I need to talk with these ladies about why they have such similar names but they are different. First of all A Family Dog is located in Bonners Ferry and you get to go through a beautiful Wildlife Refuge to get there. Karen runs A Family Dog and has a small kennel mostly for her clients while they are out of town. You may find it hard to get a spot for your dog unless you call early! I actually got to meet Karen way back when I was in high school when Karen was doing some training with the trainer that I worked for, Becky Bishop of Puppy Manners.
Karen is an awesome trainer that uses clicker training. I have had the chance to volunteer with her and help in her Pawsitive Works classes which are very different from an obedience class. First of all teens are working the dogs and the dogs aren’t theirs, they are shelter dogs that need training to hopefully help them get adopted by their dream owner. Its an incredible opportunity for both the teens and the dogs.
Karen also introduced me to Sue Sternberg – and if you’ve read some of my older posts I am greatly indebted to Karen for letting me know about her conference and then letting me carpool with her and two other Second Chance Adoption ladies. I hope to go to many more conferences with this crew!
Karen also does Canine Good Citizen testing for all of you who would like to do therapy work with your animals. You can find out more about Karen and what she does at her website AFamilyDog.com

  1. As Idaho is the Gem State, Karen is a true GEM of Idaho!
Her caring, compassion and skill with dogs & with their owners is exceptional. We have been so blessed with her work with Miracle, our miracle dog…and us! I most highly recommend Karen for anyone looking for someone to help with their family dog. We travel an hour each way to get to A Family Dog, because we know the love and care and talented training we all receive from Karen at A Family Dog.
